We all know who were the first men to climb 29,029 ft (above sea level). They are Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary summited Mount Everest on 29th May 1953. But there are a lot of unheard stories and facts about the mount Everest that one should know.

1. Dead Bodies on Route

There are more than 200 corpses remaining on Everest as of now. Most them found dead in an area called “Dead Zone“, it is 8000 metres from base camp. The scarcity of oxygen in the air is the main reason for deaths besides avalanches. Due to difficulties and the huge cost of removing dead bodies from Everest they were kept as it is there on the route. This Climber is called as “Green Boots“, his identity remains unknown but it is expected that he might be Tsewang Paljor, an Indian climber who died on Mount Everest in 1996. Every climber passes the “Green Boot” as he is lying there in a small cave on the main northwest route.

2. Traffic Jam on Everest

May 19, 2012, some 234 climbed the Mount Everest in a single trip, though 4 died in the process. Some climbers waited for 2 hours on the last leg of journey below the 40-foot rock.

3. The Name “Everest”

English name “Mount Everest” was given in 1865 upon the recommendation of Andrew Waugh (British Army Officer & Surveyor) after Sir George Everest who was his predecessor in the post of Surveyor-General of India.

In Nepal, it is officially known as Sagarmāthā (सागरमथ्था) and in Tibet as Chomolungma.

4. Sons

Son of Tenzing Sherpa and Edmund Hillary also climbed the Everest. Peter Hillary climbed Everest in 1990 and Jamling Tenzing Norgay (son of the third wife) climbed in 1996. Peter- Edmund becomes first father-son duo to climb Mount Everest.

5. Climbed 21 Times

Two Sherpas, Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi, hold the joint record for most Everest ascents, they climbed it successfully 21 times.

6. The Border

7. Helicopter Landing on Everest

Didier Delsalle, On May 14, 2005, he became the first and only person to land a helicopter, the Eurocopter AS350 Squirrel, on the 8,848 m (29,030 ft) summit of Mount Everest.

8. Bear Grylls Paraglides Everest

Man v/s Wild star Bear Grylls flew powered paraglider above Mount Everest. He hasn’t landed on the peak as it is impossible. There no official confirmation about height he reached, due to equipment failure real height of flight was not measured.

9. The Blind Climber

Other Facts

1. Seashell fossils were found on mount Everest.

2. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary spend only 15minutes on the peak. They shared a celebratory hug there and ate a bar of mint cake. Tenzing left some sweet as offering and Hillary kept a cross nearby.

3. There is tons of waste material on Mount Everest, thrown by climbers. It included faces, oxygen tanks, camping materials etc. China, India, and Nepal trying to clean up the mount Everest and regulations made strict. Every climber needs to bring the all his belonging back or else they face a heavy fine.
