“Bro, Martin Garrix ka naya song suna kya?” “Bro, Sunburn chalate hai na!” “Bro, David Guetta kya sahi dikhta hai na !” If you have heard any single line from above, somewhere in your life, then most probably you have EDM fanatic among your friends.
EDM has gained so much popularity all around the world from last decade and India is no exception for that. Indian Youth is going crazy for this music. The Hardwell Concert in Navi Mumbai was the glimpse of that. You can hear this loud and upbeat music at almost every party in urban as well as suburban and areas of India.
Although many of you are well known to this genre of music here are some facts and basic information about the EDM. So, now if any Anti-EDM asks you about it, you can respond with confidence.
- EDM has been around since 1970’s but it started gaining popularity from early 1980’s and became the world phenomena from last decade.
- Tiesto received worldwide popularity when he presented the soundtrack for entry of athletes during 2004 summer Olympics held in Athens.
- David Guetta began to gain prominence in mainstream pop music when his crossover hits secured the place in Top 40 charts such as “When love takes over” as well as his collaborations with Akon (Sexy Bitch) and Black Eyed Peas (I Gotta Feeling).
- Skrillex popularized lil’ more harsh music called “brostep” or “dubstep”.
- Avicci And Swedish House Mafia gained prominence by performing in events rather than nightclubs and helped in Getting the celebrity status for DJs.
- In, December 2011, Swedish House Mafia became the first electronic music act to sell out New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Subgenres of EDM
EDM does not refer to a specific genre rather an umbrella term for many subgenres as following:
Techno emerged as a form of a distinguished subgenre of EDM in 1988 in Detroit, Michigan, and the United States during 1980’s. It has very subtypes now such as Acid Techno, Ambient Techno, hardcore Techno, Minimal Techno, Tech house, Dub Techno.
House music was created by Club DJs and music producers in Chicago in early 1980s. House music has three subgenres as Ghetto House, Deep House, and Tech House. Swedish House Mafia has become a household name for every EDM lover.
A trance refers to a state of hypnotism and heightened consciousness. Trane was developed in Germany in 1990s. It is characterized by a tempo lying between 125 and 150 beats per minute (BPM). The subgenres of Trance are Acid, Balearic, Goa, Hard, Progressive, Psychedelic, Tech, Uplifting, Vocal.
Drum n Bass
Drum and Bass emerged from rave and old-school jungle scenes in England during the early 1990s. The style is often characterized by fast breakbeats, typically between 150–180 beats per minute with heavy bass and sub-bass lines.
Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, England emerged in late 1980’s.
Jersey club was created in New Jersey with roots in Baltimore club, Jersey club is a bass heavy style of hip-hop featuring tempos around 128-140bpm and heavily spliced samples.
Tomorrowland is one of the biggest electronic music festivals taking place in Boom, Belgium and has been organized every year since 2005. The 2016 Tomorrowland Festival took place a few days back on 22, 23, 24 July with the theme The Elixir of Life where 1, 80, 000 fans attended it.
Coachella Festival is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. It was founded by Paul Tollett in 1999. The event features not electronic dance music as well as many other genres of music, including rock, indie, hip hop. The festival also has the art installations and sculptures.
EDM Music Awards
There are several prestigious awards in EDM world, such as BRIT Awards(British Dance Act), Grammy Awards, DJ Mag (releases the list of Top 100 DJs in the world and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike were polled no.1 in 2015.) DJ Award, IDMA (International Dance Music Awards), American Music Awards, Project X magazine and several others.
Despite of growing dominance in the global music industry, EDM is criticized by a number of DJs and music producers. The over-commercialization of EDM affected the art of DJing. DJ Tim Sheridan said that the Art od EDM is replaced by “the spectacle, money, and the showbiz” because of those “push-button DJs” who use auto-sync and play pre-recorded sets of “obvious hit tracks”.
It is also criticized because of the association with recreational drug use during the EDM music events and in night clubs and several deaths were reported because of the excessive consumption of recreational drugs.
